There Are Publicly Owned Sports Teams

No one is able to be a sports team owner, usually, without being filthy, stinking rich. However, that is not always the case, as some teams actually trade on stock markets and individuals can purchase shares. Some publicly-traded sports groups are not exactly bad picks, either.

Most American not public

One of the lyrics in the song "Money" by Pink Floyd goes "I think I need a football team." Granted, they do not mean the NFL, since soccer is called football everywhere except Canada, Australia and the U.S. However, it would be neat to be the owner of sports team. The hitch is that most sports teams are personally owned. To purchase one or an ownership stake, one has to be wealthy.

A small number of sports groups, however, are publicly-traded, meaning that shares are bought and sold on stock markets. For not a whole lot of money, a person can purchase a share in publicly-traded sports teams and are technically an owner, even if that one share doesn't amount to much. Some are even decent investments. However, most are sports teams in other countries.

Expect a fast IPO

Earlier this year, it was publicized that Formula One, the world's premier racing series, was going to have an initial public offering in Singapore. Unfortunately, according to the Wall Street Journal, the majority owners of Formula One, CVC Capital Partners, put the brakes on the Formula One Initial Public Offering. However, they do plan to hold it later this year.

Instead of doing an IPO in Singapore where the Manchester United was planning on doing it at first, it is being done in the United States, which is great news. The Wall Street Journal explained that the Glazer family owns most of the Manchester team, which is the New York Yankees of soccer, and they also own the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of Football. The IPO is already scheduled, according to the Atlantic.

Be careful

You can be certain you will make money off of Manchester United after trading begins since it is the biggest sports franchise that exists. Another great option is Madison Square Garden's where the stock has traded above the industry average consistently, according to Daily Finance.

On the other hand, the American Basketball Association, a semi-professional basketball league, is presently selling, according to BusinessWeek, for 5 cents per share. World Wrestling Entertainment is also publicly traded, but according to Daily Finance, hasn't been doing that well lately.

Some other renowned soccer groups are publicly traded but according to the Atlantic, do not do as well as typical stocks, as their market performance is heavily tied to game performance, and losing streaks tend to tank share value.

The Green Bay Packers are the only team in America that is publicly owned. It is bad investment though since stock cannot be sold for profit and pays no dividends. The National Football League does not allow over 32 owners at a time for any one team, but the Packers got past that rule by joining the league before the rule started.
